XCancel is down, and no single site replaces it. When we checked on 13 October 2026, xcancel.com showed a "service is suspended" notice. The xcancel alternatives that still work are other Nitter instances (nitter.netbub.com and nitter.tiekoetter.com both showed full profiles and threads), the xxcancel.com redirector, and the limited logged-out view on x.com itself. Any of them can break at any time, for the same reason xcancel did.
This guide is for readers who want to see one X profile or one thread right now without signing up. For the bigger picture on the Nitter project, its forks and self-hosting, read our Nitter alternatives that still work in 2026.
The short answer
| You want to... | Try this first (tested 13 Oct 2026) | Fallback |
|---|---|---|
| See someone's recent posts | nitter.netbub.com/username | x.com/username logged out (a few posts only) |
| Read one post and its replies | nitter.netbub.com/username/status/ID | x.com post page (no replies) |
| Read a long thread | Thread Reader App, if someone unrolled it | A working Nitter instance |
| Swap the URL like xcancel | xxcancel.com/username | Replace x.com with any working instance |
| Search X | nitter.netbub.com/search | None logged out. x.com search requires login. |
Why xcancel is down
XCancel was never its own product. It was a public Nitter instance with one memorable trick: change x.com to xcancel.com in any link and you got the post without the login wall. A Hacker News commenter put the appeal plainly in 2024: "you only have to insert 'cancel' into the existing x.com URL."
On 24 August 2026, X Corp sent cease and desist letters to the Nitter project and to XCancel. TechCrunch covered it the next day. XCancel shut down, came back on 7 September after getting legal advice, and was suspended again on 14 September. u/Stuys posted the news to r/DataHoarder that morning, where it picked up 648 upvotes.
The notice on xcancel.com was still up when we checked. Part of it reads: "due to a new development in the ongoing legal proceedings, we are required to suspend this service again until further notice. We can't share more details." It links you back to X.
How to view an X profile without logging in
1. A working Nitter instance. This is the closest thing to xcancel. On 13 October 2026, these loaded the @NASA profile with 20 or more posts for us, without an account:
- nitter.netbub.com loaded profiles, single posts with replies, and search.
- nitter.tiekoetter.com passed its own bot check automatically and loaded profiles and posts. This instance has search turned off.
- nitter.meowing.monster and shi.meowing.de loaded profiles after a short check.
Several other instances on the public lists stopped us at a "prove you're human" or Cloudflare page. We did not solve CAPTCHAs. Before you try any of them, open status.d420.de, which health-checks instances every 15 minutes.
2. A redirector. xxcancel.com takes the same path xcancel did and forwards you to an instance. Ours landed on shi.meowing.de with posts showing. twiiit.com does the same job, but it sent us to instances stuck on a browser check.
3. x.com logged out. This works better than people assume. A profile page showed the bio, follower counts and five posts. You lose the chronological feed, replies and search, and a login prompt appears as you scroll.
4. nitter.cf. This "Nitter replacement" loaded @NASA's profile and recent posts with no check in our test. u/Vast-Scientist-8454 recommended it in r/rss. We could not find out who runs it, so do not sign into anything there.
How to read a single post or thread
A single post is the easiest thing to get. Logged out on x.com, a post page loaded for us with its text, time, views and likes, but the replies did not load.
For replies, open the same path on a Nitter instance: take x.com/user/status/123 and change the domain. On nitter.netbub.com and nitter.tiekoetter.com that gave us the main post plus 36 replies.
For long threads, Thread Reader App shows an unrolled thread as one page with no login. It only has threads somebody asked it to unroll, though for popular accounts that is often most of them.
If someone shared a link with you in a chat app, link fixers like fxtwitter and fixupx exist to make previews render inside Discord or Telegram. When we opened fixupx in a normal browser, it redirected us to x.com. These tools help with previews, not with reading.
Why every xcancel alternative keeps breaking
There are three reasons, and none of them is going away.
The first is legal pressure. The letters went to operators, not readers. One instance host, miningtcup on Hacker News, was blunt about how most of them cope: "Most nitter instances don't do anything to avoid legal trouble from X. They simply hope that X will not go after them."
Commercial viewers get shut down too. When xcancel first went down, a post in r/Holostars told everyone to switch to twstalker. A reply from u/Michael_The_Madlad said another web viewer they had found "has also been shut down yesterday as well." In r/twitterhelp, a thread with 180 upvotes on 28 August 2026 was titled "Elon has just come for TwitterWebViewer like he did for Nitter/XCancel." twstalker and sotwe both blocked our test browser outright.
Then there's capacity. Public instances run on a small pool of X session tokens. When a popular instance dies, its users pile onto the next one, which then rate-limits or adds a CAPTCHA. A commenter in r/DataHoarder, u/KantutinQKipaymu, described it well: "Why it says all of em are rate-limited for me 😭 nvm... I found one working".
So treat any instance as temporary. Keep two bookmarked and the status page handy.
The honest alternative: a burner account
The strongest argument against everything above came from a Hacker News commenter, robeym: "The easiest solution is to make an empty alias account on twitter just for the purpose of accessing links." On reliability alone, robeym is right. An account gets you search, replies and a real feed, and no instance outage can take that away.
The counter-argument holds up too. wffurr replied that viewing with an alias account means "you're still contributing to their DAU / MAU (daily/monthly active user) count," which is what many xcancel users were trying to avoid in the first place. Logged-in browsing can also go wrong. In the comments on a widely shared YouTube video about Nitter's shutdown, @Etamalgren described being banned for "inauthentic content" on an account used mostly to browse.
Our take: if you open X links once a week, use a Nitter instance and accept the occasional dead end. If you open them daily, a reading-only account is less frustrating, as long as you never automate anything on it. And if the account you follow also posts on Bluesky or Mastodon, follow it there and skip the problem entirely.
For developers
If you came to xcancel to pull data rather than read, a public instance is the wrong tool, and the status page asks people not to scrape them. Our paid option for developers is the XAutoDM API: profile and post reads, follower and lead lists, and outreach actions from accounts you connect, with dry-run test keys for building. Our guide on scraping X data with an API in 2026 compares the routes.
You may not need any of that, because two free tools could cover it. The Twitter ID finder converts a handle to its numeric ID with no login. The Twitter advanced search builder writes the exact search operators for you, though you need an account to run the search on x.com itself.
