Nitter and XCancel: What Reddit Says After the Notice
    Contents

Nitter's own maintainer says X Corp sent the project cease and desist letters on 24 August 2026, and Reddit has spent two months arguing about what that means. This page collects what people on Reddit said about Nitter and XCancel, what the instance operators reported, and how it connects to older r/nitter threads. It records opinions and makes no ruling on the law.

Written and edited by Sarthak Gupta, XAutoDM. Facts below were checked on 31 October 2026.

How we collected this and what we could not see

We couldn't use Reddit's own search. Instead we pulled threads through a third-party Reddit API (ChatterAPI), searched for Nitter, XCancel and their misspellings, and read the highest-scoring threads and their top comments, plus a few older r/nitter posts. Deleted comments and anything behind a login are missing. Scores and comment counts change over time, so we quote few of them. What users say about their own experience is testimony, not data, and none of it here is a survey.

    What is confirmed

We read two primary sources ourselves. The notice on nitter.net says X Corp sent cease and desist letters on 24 August 2026 demanding a permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the repository, then sent a second letter with the same demands on 8 September. It also says that on 10 October the project "currently has no legal counsel". TechCrunch reported the first letters on 25 August and noted that they cite the Texas Harmful Access by Computer Act and the Lanham Act. That is X's claim, not a finding. XCancel's first notice, as copied into a Reddit thread, said it received a letter on 24 August. We read the notice now on xcancel.com, which says the service is suspended again "due to a new development in the ongoing legal proceedings". On 31 October 2026 xcancel.com still answered with HTTP 451.

The rest of this page is what Redditors said.

    What Reddit says

Most people used Nitter to read, not to scrape. In r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, u/SamVegas explained that the subreddit bans direct X links because you need an account to open them, and XCancel got around that (thread). In r/DataHoarder, u/Bohima-Focus7145 said Nitter was the most reliable way to archive X pages, and that every other instance was unusable once the main one went down (thread). Those are two different needs. The second is closer to scraping than the first.

Nobody agrees on the legal side. u/leodw in r/GamingLeaksAndRumours compared XCancel to an internet archive and said they did not know the legal basis either way (thread). In r/fossdroid, u/BonsaiSoul pointed out that GitHub takes down forks along with the original, so a plain fork is not a backup. They added that losing the core developers would hurt even if the code survives (thread). Treat both as opinions.

Self-hosting is harder than it sounds. In r/selfhosted, u/Bonsailinse said you would need many X accounts to scrape without getting blocked. u/Omotai said Nitter needs a working account just to set up, so it ends up being regular X with extra steps (thread). One user in the same thread hosted it for a while before moving to XCancel.

The common reply is to leave. In r/Piracy and r/LinusTechTips, the most upvoted answers to "what is the alternative" said to stop using X. Others replied that people had tried that before and drifted back. We include this because it explains why searches for Nitter alternatives stay high even though no alternative lasts.

What the older r/nitter threads show

This isn't new. Nitter has been publicly dying and coming back since at least 2023.

    • In July 2023, a thread on r/nitter asked whether X's rate limits were the end of Nitter (thread). Nitter survived.
    • In February 2024, u/theeosapien123 posted that Nitter had "finally" stopped working for everyone. A reply pointed to the community status page as the place to check its health (thread).
    • In March 2024, u/animegrafmays, who runs nitter.poast.org, replied that X had killed the guest accounts Nitter relied on and that he was fighting a scraping attack from more than a million IPs (thread). He said he wouldn't suggest using real accounts publicly.
    • In April 2025, u/NewBCplayer reported nitter.poast.org returning 403 errors. Others said it worked for them, and the poster later said it started working after he left Bangkok (thread). u/zinn0ber asked people to stop posting a death announcement every few days. Keep that one in mind, because "it's down for me" and "it's down" are different claims.

    What this means for you

If you only want to read, two years of threads point to one lesson: no instance lasts. The options that hold up are following the account somewhere else or having an X account yourself. We keep a tested, dated list of what still loads in XCancel alternatives: how to view X without an account.

If you needed Nitter for data, a public instance was never the right source, and its own status page says so. An API is the reliable route. Our Twitter scraper API page and the X API alternative page cover what you can pull and what it costs. Most casual readers won't convert here, and that's fine, because most of them just want to read a post.
