X Handle Checker
Check whether an X (Twitter) username is taken or free. No login, no sign-up.
How handle availability works on X
X handles are 1 to 15 characters and allow letters, numbers and underscores only. No hyphens, no dots, no spaces. Handles are unique across the whole platform, and once an account holds one, nobody else can take it while that account exists.
This tool asks X whether an account currently exists on that handle. If nothing comes back, the handle is probably free. Probably, not definitely — and that distinction is worth understanding before you plan a rebrand around it. Suspended accounts, deactivated accounts and handles X reserves internally all look exactly the same from outside: absent. A deactivated account also holds its handle for 30 days before releasing it.
So treat a green result as "very likely available, go try it" rather than a guarantee. The only definitive test is attempting to set it on a real account.
How to check an X username
- Type the handle you want, with or without the @.
- Hit Check availability.
- If it is taken, you will see who holds it, their follower count and when the account was created.
- If it looks free, go and claim it — availability can change at any moment.
Tips for better results
- Shorter is better but scarcer. Almost every common word under 6 characters has been taken since 2009.
- If your first choice is held by a long-dormant account, X does not release handles on request. Plan around it rather than waiting.
- Check the handle across other platforms at the same time if brand consistency matters to you.
- Underscores read as a workaround. A slightly longer clean handle usually looks more credible than a short one padded with them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if an X (Twitter) username is available?
Enter it above. The tool asks X whether an account currently exists on that handle and tells you instantly. If an account holds it, you also see the display name, follower count and account age.
What characters can an X handle contain?
Letters, numbers and underscores, 1 to 15 characters. No hyphens, spaces, dots or other punctuation. Handles are not case sensitive.
Does an available result guarantee I can register it?
No. Suspended accounts, recently deactivated accounts and handles reserved by X are all invisible from outside and look identical to a free handle. A deactivated account also holds its handle for 30 days. Treat a positive result as very likely rather than certain.
Can I get an inactive account's handle released?
Not by request. X has historically announced handle-release programmes and not followed through consistently, and there is no supported process for claiming a dormant account's username. Assume a taken handle stays taken.
Does changing my handle lose my followers?
No. Changing your handle keeps your followers, posts and DMs. What breaks is every existing link to your old profile URL and any mentions of the old handle in other people's posts.
