Yes, XCancel is down. On 31 October 2026, xcancel.com returned HTTP 451 and a page saying the service is suspended until further notice because of "a new development in the ongoing legal proceedings". That notice has been up since 14 September 2026. If you came here to open an X link, use our tested list of XCancel alternatives.

Status timeline
| Date (2026) | What Reddit and XCancel's own notices show |
|---|---|
| 24-25 August | XCancel shows a notice that it received a letter from X Corp asking it to cease and desist. u/SuddenDepact posts it to r/GamingLeaksAndRumours and it becomes the biggest thread on the topic (thread). |
| 2 September | u/Auld_Folks_at_Home says it "sporadically" works, about twice in ten tries (r/StallmanWasRight). |
| 6 September | r/GamingLeaksAndRumours reports it back online, with a statement from the Nitter project (thread). |
| 14 September | Suspended again. u/NXGZ posts the notice to r/Piracy and u/Stuys to r/DataHoarder (thread). |
| 31 October | Still HTTP 451 when we checked. |
What is XCancel, and what did it do?
XCancel was a public instance of Nitter, an open-source front end for reading X. If you changed x.com to xcancel.com in a link, the post opened without a login. In r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, u/SamVegas explained why that mattered to them: the subreddit bans direct X links because you need an account to open them, and XCancel got around that.
Is XCancel coming back?
Nobody on Reddit knows, and neither do we. The 14 September notice says only that it is suspended "until further notice" and that the operators can't share more. On 10 October, Nitter's own site said the project has no legal counsel and is looking for funding and help. Be wary of threads claiming it's back. The last such report we found was from u/Auld_Folks_at_Home in early September, and it was hit and miss.
Is XCancel safe?
We found no Reddit thread reporting that XCancel itself was unsafe. Its trouble was legal, a dispute between X Corp and the people running it. For a reader, the practical risks are different:
- A third-party viewer can see which posts you open, so do not log into one.
- Shutdowns attract lookalike domains. Several similar viewers closed within days of each other in late August, so treat an unfamiliar domain claiming to be XCancel with suspicion.
- Moderators were still recommending replacements in early September. On 1 September the r/CaitlynArcane mods listed nitter.cf as the working option (post). We could not find out who runs that site.
What to use instead
Another Nitter instance works if you accept that it can vanish. Our guide has the dated test results, the status page to check first, and what each fallback cannot do. For the wider Reddit discussion, read Nitter and XCancel: what Reddit says after the notice.
There are limits to what we could see. Reddit's own search was unavailable to us, so we pulled threads through a third-party Reddit API and read what it returned, which is not everything posted. Deleted comments are missing.
