\"Not Sent. Tap for More Actions\" on X: What It Means and How to Fix It

"Not sent. Tap for more actions" means something specific: X accepted your tap, tried to deliver the message, and failed. It is not a typing error and it is usually not your connection. Tapping the message offers Retry or Delete, neither of which tells you why.

There are five causes. They look identical in the app and have completely different fixes.

1. You hit a sending limit

The most common cause by a distance, and the one people rule out first because they were "only sending a few".

X enforces a daily DM cap and an unpublished hourly throttle underneath it. You can be far under the daily number and still be blocked because of the last sixty minutes. There is also behavioural throttling that ignores the published numbers entirely if your sending pattern looks automated.

How to tell: it started failing after a run of messages, and it affects everyone you try, not one person.

Fix: stop for a few hours. Not slow down, stop. Then restart at about half your previous rate. Retrying into a rate limit is what turns a few hours of throttling into a few days.

2. The recipient does not accept DMs from you

X lets people limit DMs to accounts they follow. If they have that on and they do not follow you, your message cannot be delivered, and X does not tell you that is why.

How to tell: it fails for one specific person while everyone else works.

Fix: there is none from your side. Reply to one of their posts publicly instead, or get a follow first.

3. You have been blocked

A block produces a permanent send failure.

How to tell: open their profile in a logged-out or private window. If it loads there but not while you are signed in, you are blocked.

Fix: nothing. Retrying will never work.

4. The message tripped a spam filter

X screens DM content. Links, particularly shortened ones, are the usual trigger. Identical text sent to several people in a row is the other.

How to tell: the same message fails repeatedly to different people, but a different message goes through fine.

Fix: rewrite it. Drop the link from the first message and send it after they reply. Vary wording between recipients rather than pasting the same text.

5. The account is restricted

If X has restricted your account, sending fails alongside other quiet symptoms: your posts stop appearing in search, or your account stops showing up when someone searches your handle.

Two questions get you to the cause in under a minute:

1. Does it fail for everyone, or one person? Everyone points at a limit or a restriction. One person points at their settings or a block.
2. Does a different message go through? Yes points at a spam filter on the original text. No points at a limit.

If you send outreach, this is a pacing symptom

For anyone running cold DMs, this error is almost always cause 1. The account was sending at a rate it could not hold.

X publishes a ceiling of 500 DMs a day. From what we measure across outreach accounts, the rate that actually holds without tripping a restriction is roughly 30 a day on a verified account and 7 on an unverified one. The unintuitive part: reply rate protects you more than staying under a number does. Messages people answer are the strongest evidence to X that you are not spam, which is why a smaller, better-targeted list outlasts a bigger one.
