Why Can't I Send Messages on X? DMs Not Working, Fixed

Your DMs have stopped sending. X has told you nothing useful about why. There are six realistic causes, and two questions separate them in about thirty seconds.

Start here: the two questions

1. Does it fail for everyone, or just one person? Everyone points at your account. One person points at theirs.

2. Does a different message go through to the same person? Yes points at the message content. No points at the relationship or a limit.

That is genuinely most of the diagnosis. Now the six causes, in order of how often they are the answer.

1. You hit a sending limit

The most common cause, and the one people rule out first because it "wasn't that many".

X enforces a daily DM cap and an unpublished hourly throttle beneath it, plus behavioural throttling that ignores both if your sending pattern looks automated. You can be well under the daily number and still be stopped by the last hour.

Confirms it: fails for everyone, started after a run of messages, and receiving still works fine.

Fix: stop completely for a few hours, then resume at about half the rate. Retrying into a limit is what turns hours of throttling into days. Full detail in X's rate limits.

2. They only accept DMs from people they follow

X lets anyone restrict DMs to accounts they follow. If they have that on and do not follow you, nothing you send arrives, and X does not explain that.

Confirms it: one person fails, everyone else works, and their profile loads normally.

Fix: none from your side. Reply to one of their posts publicly instead.

3. You have been blocked

Confirms it: open their profile in a logged-out window. Loads there but not while signed in means blocked.

Fix: nothing, and do not try from another account. That is evasion and it risks your own account.

4. The message tripped a spam filter

X screens DM content. Links, especially shortened ones, are the usual trigger. Identical text sent repeatedly is the other.

Confirms it: the same message fails to several people, but a different message sends fine.

Fix: rewrite it. Move any link to a follow-up after they reply, and vary wording between recipients.

5. Your account is restricted

If X has restricted your account, sending fails alongside quieter symptoms: your posts stop showing in search, or your account stops appearing when someone searches your handle.

6. X is down

Occasionally it really is not you. If sending fails across every account you have access to, check whether others are reporting the same thing before troubleshooting anything.

The pattern that catches outreach accounts

If you send cold DMs, causes 1 and 5 will account for nearly everything you experience, and they are the same underlying problem: sending faster than the account can carry.

X publishes a ceiling of 500 DMs a day. From what we measure across outreach accounts, the rate that actually holds without a restriction is roughly 30 a day on a verified account and 7 on an unverified one. Most people who hit this problem were somewhere between those two numbers and the published one.

Two things that help more than staying under a number:

Reply rate. Messages people answer are the strongest evidence to X that you are not spam. A smaller, better-targeted list survives where a bigger one does not.

Filtering before you send. Some proportion of any list restricts DMs to followers. Sending into threads that were never open burns volume you do not have much of.

Short version

Two questions: does it fail for everyone or one person, and does a different message get through? Everyone plus any message means a limit or a restriction, both of which clear on their own if you stop. One person means their settings or a block, neither of which you can fix. Retry once, never repeatedly.
