Nitter is still around, but nitter.net is gone. On 13 October 2026 we opened every Nitter instance we could find in a fresh browser with no X account. Three still showed a full profile with posts: nitter.tiekoetter.com, nitter.netbub.com and nitter.meowing.monster. Most of the others gave us a bot check, an error page or the takedown notice. That makes a working public instance the best Nitter alternative today. Pick one from a live status page and keep a backup plan for the day it goes down too.
This post is about the Nitter project itself: what happened to it, which instances and forks still work, and what to use instead if you want something that lasts. If you just need to read one X profile or thread right now without logging in, our companion guide on xcancel alternatives and viewing X without an account is quicker.
The short answer
- These Nitter instances worked on 13 Oct 2026: nitter.tiekoetter.com (also reachable as xnologin.com), nitter.netbub.com, nitter.meowing.monster and shi.meowing.de.
- These sat behind a human check when we tested: nitter.pp.ua, nitter.click, nitter.kareem.one, shitter.thepixora.com, nitter.space and nuku.trabun.org.
- These are gone or broken: nitter.net shows a takedown notice, xcancel.com is suspended, nitter.poast.org gave no connection, lightbrd.com was blocked and nitt.tr returned a 503.
- The best long-term option is to self-host, or to follow the accounts you care about on a platform that does not fight logged-out readers.
What happened to nitter in 2026
Nitter was an open-source front end that fetched public X posts and served them without ads, tracking or JavaScript. It had run for seven years when TechCrunch reported on 25 August 2026 that X had sent the project cease and desist letters, and that the same software powered XCancel.
Here is what has happened since, based on the project's own notices and the coverage around them:
| Date (2026) | What happened |
|---|---|
| 24 August | X Corp sends cease and desist letters demanding a permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the repository. nitter.net and xcancel.com go offline. |
| 7 September | XCancel comes back online. Nitter says it will continue "following legal advice". |
| 8 September | A second letter arrives with the same demands. |
| 14 September | XCancel is suspended again "due to a new development in the ongoing legal proceedings". |
| 9 October | The zedeus/nitter repository is archived on GitHub. |
| 10 October | nitter.net posts an update: the project "currently has no legal counsel" and the maintainer is seeking funding and legal help. |
The Hacker News thread on the original letters drew 1,214 points and 1,352 comments, a fair sign of how many people relied on Nitter. On YouTube the reaction was blunter. Under a video titled "X Has Shut Down Nitter", one viewer (@ЭДЭ) described the exact problem Nitter solved:
"i remember following some niche indie dev authors and was forced to register in X to view their content and then getting banned because algorithm marks me as suspious lol."
That is the whole use case: people who want to read a few accounts without becoming X users.
Nitter instances we tested on 13 October 2026
We opened the @NASA profile on each instance in desktop Chromium without logging into X, let any bot check clear by itself, and counted the posts on the page. We did not solve CAPTCHAs, so an instance that asked us to prove we were human is marked unverified, not dead.
| Instance | Profile loads | Single post + replies | Search | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| nitter.tiekoetter.com | Yes, 21 posts | Yes | Disabled | Anubis check clears automatically. xnologin.com serves the same instance. |
| nitter.netbub.com | Yes, 21 posts | Yes | Yes | Fastest of the working set in our test. |
| nitter.meowing.monster | Yes, 21 posts | Not tested | Yes | Anubis check, sometimes slow to clear. |
| shi.meowing.de | Yes, 20 posts | Not tested | Not tested | xxcancel.com redirects here. |
| nitter.pp.ua, shitter.thepixora.com | Human check | "Prove you're human" page. | ||
| nitter.click, nitter.kareem.one, nitter.space, nuku.trabun.org | Browser check | Cloudflare or similar challenge did not clear. | ||
| nitter.jaydenha.uk | Queue | "Nitter Access Queue" page. | ||
| nitter.net | No | Takedown notice. | ||
| xcancel.com | No | HTTP 451, "XCancel service is suspended." |
Two tools take some of the guessing out of this list. The community status page at status.d420.de health-checks instances every 15 minutes and shows uptime, Nitter version and whether RSS is on. The top of the page also says "Please do NOT use these instances for scraping, host nitter yourself." Take that seriously. The second is the instance list on the Shitter fork's wiki on Codeberg, updated 12 October 2026, which covers working instances, Tor addresses and redirectors.
The bot checks exist because of scrapers. One instance operator, miningtcup on Hacker News, explained that "Some of the instances use CAPTCHAs such as DogWAF to prevent scraping." Public instances run on a small pool of X session tokens, and scrapers burn through those tokens fast, so the check keeps the instance alive for readers.
The same operator was candid about the legal side in another comment: "Most nitter instances don't do anything to avoid legal trouble from X. They simply hope that X will not go after them." That risk applies to every instance on this list. Any of them can vanish next week.
Nitter forks and replacement front ends
The repository is archived, but the code lives on. Nitter is AGPLv3, and there are forks.
Shitter (codeberg.org/mv12star/shitter) describes itself as "a Nitter fork". It has the same features (no JavaScript, RSS, themes), and it hosts the most current instance list and the self-hosting guides.
nitter.cf, which brands itself teapawt, calls itself a "Nitter replacement". When we tried it on 13 October 2026, it loaded the @NASA profile with recent posts and showed no bot check. In r/rss, u/Vast-Scientist-8454 recommended it: "nitter.cf still works for me." We don't know who runs it. Use it for convenience, but don't build anything on it.
Redirectors like twiiit.com, xxcancel.com and twit.0r.cx are not instances. They send your request on to whichever instance they think is up. In our test, xxcancel.com took us to shi.meowing.de, where posts loaded. twiiit.com sent us to instances stuck on a Cloudflare check.
Self-hosting is the only way to run a Nitter you control. On Hacker News, Saline9515 put it plainly: "Hosting a nitter instance on a Rpi or a phone behind tailscale is trivial in the post-llm age, if anyone wants to try it." The catch is that a self-hosted instance needs session tokens from real X accounts. You have to create those accounts, and X can suspend them. Read the fork's guides, keep your instance private, and keep request volume at personal-use levels.
Nitter alternatives that are not nitter
If your instance dies, these are the other ways people read X in 2026. We tested each one on 13 October 2026.
- Logged out on x.com, a profile page showed the header and a handful of posts (five in our test). A single post page loaded with its view and like counts. Search redirected straight to the login screen, and replies did not load.
- Thread Reader App's user page for @NASA listed unrolled threads, readable without an account. It only covers threads someone has already asked it to unroll.
- bird.makeup is an ActivityPub bridge. It mirrors public X accounts so you can follow them from a Mastodon account instead of visiting X. Its homepage said it was crawling 1,345 users per hour.
- Bluesky and Mastodon aren't viewers, but plenty of accounts cross-post there. In the r/Holostars thread about XCancel's shutdown, the top reply (u/brickwallrunner, 131 upvotes) pointed to the same creator's Bluesky profile. Before hunting for a viewer, check whether the account posts elsewhere.
- Ad-supported viewer sites such as twstalker and sotwe both blocked our browser with a Cloudflare page. They are closed-source and ad-funded, and several similar sites (TwitterWebViewer among them) were shut down in late August 2026.
The case for not bothering
On Reddit, the most upvoted reaction to Nitter's shutdown wasn't a workaround. In r/degoogle, u/bicyclefortwo got 834 upvotes for "Honestly, replacing X with nothing at all has been fantastic for my mental health + hobbies." Another reply in the same thread, from u/phoneguyfl, made the practical case: "I suspect any service that offers anonymous access to Twitter/X will soon get a cease and desist as well."
That second point is right, and the page above shows why. XCancel came back once and was suspended again a week later. TwitterWebViewer lasted days. Any public instance on our list could get the same letter. If you need to keep up with five accounts, follow them on the other places they post, or self-host. Bookmarking a new mirror every month won't last.
We disagree with "nothing at all" for people who work on X. If X is where your customers talk, you still need to read it, and the last section covers how.
If you need X data for work, not reading
Nitter was never meant to be a data pipeline, and the status page asks people not to treat instances as one. If you were scraping Nitter for profiles, followers, posts or mentions, you need an API for that.
The official X API is now pay-per-use (our breakdown of X API pricing in 2026 has the per-call costs). The XAutoDM API is the alternative we sell. One key covers profile and post reads, follower and lead lists, and outreach actions from accounts you connect. Test keys run in dry-run mode, so you can build without spending credits. It is a paid API for developers who need structured data rather than a page to read. If you are weighing it, is scraping Twitter legal in 2026 covers the rules to understand first.
For a one-off lookup, our free Twitter ID finder turns any @handle into its permanent numeric user ID with no login. That ID is often the one thing people opened Nitter to get.
Bookmark the status page and pick two working instances. If X is part of your job, stop depending on a mirror that can disappear overnight.
Your next customer is already on X.
