Ghost Ban on X: How to Check for One and Fix It

A ghost ban is the restriction that costs the most and shows the least. Your posts publish. Your timeline looks exactly as it always did. Your follower count does not drop. What changes is that people who do not already follow you stop seeing anything you write, in search and in replies.

You keep talking. The room is empty. Nothing in the app mentions it.

Checking for one

The whole difficulty here is that you cannot test it from your own logged-in account. X consistently shows you your own content whether or not anybody else can see it, so self-checking always returns a false clean.

Two reliable ways:

Ask someone who does not follow you. Have them search a distinctive phrase from one of your recent posts and check the Latest tab, not Top. If your post is missing for them but visible to you, that is the signature.

Check from logged out. Open a private window, search an exact phrase from a recent post, and look at Latest. Same logic, no second person required.

One honest caveat, because it matters: the reply half of a ghost ban, whether your replies get buried behind a "Show more replies" link on somebody else's thread, cannot be tested reliably from outside X by anyone, us included. It needs the reply tree of a thread you do not control, rendered for a logged-out visitor. Any tool that gives you a confident verdict on reply deboosting is guessing and presenting the guess as data. We would rather tell you which half we can actually measure.

What causes it

Ghost bans are applied automatically by a spam classifier, not by a person reviewing your account. It is watching for patterns, and the patterns that set it off are consistent:

Bursts. Speed is weighted more heavily than total volume. Forty replies in fifteen minutes reads as automation; forty across a day does not. This is the single most common cause and the easiest to fix.

Repetition. Identical or near-identical text posted or sent repeatedly. Two byte-identical messages are a far stronger signal than two messages that merely share a shape.

Reply-heavy behaviour toward strangers. Replying constantly to accounts that do not follow you, especially large ones, especially with links, is close to the textbook definition of what the classifier is built to catch.

Blocks and reports. A cluster of these in a short window can do it alone, independent of anything you did wrong.

Being new. A month-old account behaving like a three-year-old one gets far less benefit of the doubt.

Getting out of it

There is no appeal route, because no human made the decision. What clears it is the behaviour pattern changing for long enough that the classifier reassesses.

1. Full stop for 48 hours on whatever triggered it. Automated replies, bulk follows, mass DMs, link-heavy replies to strangers. Reduced is not the same as stopped.
2. Delete what genuinely broke the rules. Do not mass-delete your history, because the engagement record on your older posts is part of what argues you are a real account.
3. Behave like a person for a week. Real replies to people you actually know, ordinary posts, no bursts.
4. Re-test at 48 hours and again at a week. The index does not refresh minute to minute, so checking hourly just reads noise.

Most ghost bans lift within a few days to two weeks. Past three weeks of genuinely clean behaviour, you are probably looking at a report-driven restriction rather than an automated one, and that is worth raising with X support directly.

For outreach accounts, this is the warning shot

If you run cold DMs on X, a ghost ban is rarely the expensive problem by itself. It is the signal that the account's behaviour has crossed a line the classifier watches, and DM throttling is usually next. That one costs money.

Both come from the same root cause and have the same fix: slower sending, spread across more hours, from accounts old enough and warm enough to carry it. The thing that protects an outreach account most is not staying under a number. It is reply rate. Messages people answer are the strongest available evidence that you are not spam, which is why a smaller, better-qualified list beats a bigger one almost every time.
