How to Get Verified on X in 2026 (And Whether It's Worth It)

Verification on X stopped being something you apply for. It is a subscription with eligibility rules attached, which makes it simpler than the old process and considerably more confusing to anyone who remembers that one.

What it actually takes

Subscribe to X Premium, then meet the eligibility bar:

• A complete profile. Display name and profile photo both set.
• An account older than 30 days. This is the one most people fail.
• A confirmed phone number. Not just an email.
• No recent identity changes. If you have changed your handle, display name or profile photo recently, verification is withheld until things settle.

Review usually takes a few hours, sometimes a few days. If you change your handle, display name or photo after being verified, the check comes off until it is reviewed again. That trips up people who verify and then immediately rebrand.

What you get

The badge is the visible part and the least interesting one:

• Reply prioritisation. Your replies rank higher in conversations, which is the benefit most people actually notice.
• Longer posts and longer video uploads.
• Edit post.
• Fewer ads, and none at all on Premium+.
• Higher limits across the board, including DMs.

The benefit nobody advertises

That last point deserves its own section, because for anyone doing outreach it dwarfs everything else on the list.

X throttles accounts far below its published limits based on behaviour, and verification buys a substantially higher threshold before that throttling starts. From what we measure across accounts sending outreach, a verified account sustains roughly 30 DMs a day without tripping a restriction, against roughly 7 for an unverified one.

Worth being clear about what verification does not do: it will not save an account that is sending too fast. It raises the ceiling, it does not remove it. A verified account blasting 200 DMs an hour still gets restricted.

Is it worth it?

Yes if you reply a lot and want those replies seen, you are doing outreach and the sending headroom pays for itself immediately, or you post long-form content.

Probably not if you mostly read, you have a small account and post rarely, or you were expecting the badge itself to change how people perceive you. It signals a subscription now, not notability, and most people know that.

What happened to the old kind

The notability-based process is gone and is not coming back. Two things replaced parts of it: gold checks for verified organisations, which are a separate and much more expensive product, and grey checks for government and multilateral accounts.

If you are chasing verification for credibility rather than for the features, it is worth knowing that the signal is not what it was in 2019.

Common reasons it fails

• Account under 30 days. No way around it but waiting.
• No confirmed phone number. The most common oversight.
• Incomplete profile. Both display name and photo have to be set.
• Recent identity changes. Settle your handle and photo first, then verify.
