Reddit's answer to saving X video depends on how many you want: gallery-dl for a profile or a big batch, a paste-the-link website for one clip. Both have catches, and most of the threads we read are people running into them. This post covers what Redditors recommend, where each method breaks and what they say about account risk. It isn't a step-by-step guide. Our how-to on saving Twitter videos covers the clicks.

How we collected this and what we could not see

We had no access to Reddit's own search. The threads here came from a research pass on 31 October 2026 across Reddit and X search results, and on 1 November 2026 we read the saved copy of each thread, comments included. That is a handful of threads from r/DataHoarder, r/Twitter, r/androidapps and r/BestGitHubRepos, dated March to October 2026. We did not run gallery-dl or JDownloader against X for this post, so "works" and "breaks" below are what posters reported, not our tests. We can't see anyone's account standing. A few comments in these threads looked promotional, and we left those out.

    What Reddit recommends first

    • gallery-dl came up in r/DataHoarder (15 June 2026), when someone asked for the current best way to pull media from an X profile and ruled out paid extensions that cap you at roughly 100 images. u/Bubbly_Republic3365 answered gallery-dl, and u/sonofgildorluthien called it the only real answer. It runs from the command line, so there is no window to click.
    • JDownloader is what u/Qail97 uses in the same thread, and they say WFDownloader is currently broken. In another r/DataHoarder thread (19 May 2026), a poster who tried WFDownloader on bookmarks says it only picked up part of what they needed, so they switched to JDownloader.
    • For one video, people point to paste-the-link websites. In r/Twitter (30 August 2026), u/rottenboy59 and u/ipbanthisonetooassho both say to copy the post link and use an online downloader. u/GHIGHIONE suggests a Telegram bot.
    • On phones, the suggestions are apps built on yt-dlp. In r/androidapps (29 July 2026), u/kenopsia0 names Seal and YTDLnis, and u/darkkid_ links YTDLnis too. NewPipe also comes up, but only for YouTube.
    • ReClip (r/BestGitHubRepos, 27 October 2026) is a self-hosted yt-dlp front end, a small web interface and nothing more. Commenters including u/One_Conscious_Future and u/Critical_Luck3167 point out that this is all it is, and u/northernmoosemuff says getting it running was not easy for beginners.

    Where each method breaks

With gallery-dl, most of the grief is about logins and cookies. In another r/DataHoarder thread (4 March 2026), the poster got an AuthRequired error and a permission error on the browser's cookie file even after exporting cookies. u/rka1284 says Chrome locks that file while it is open, so close the browser fully or read cookies from Firefox. A later commenter, u/Guardduck9876, still got the same error after trying that, and nobody in the thread solved it.

In a March 2026 thread, u/Silent-Extent70 couldn't log in through gallery-dl and kept getting an API error. The cookie path in their config did nothing. u/werid says gallery-dl broke for them overnight and the maintainer fixed it, but only in the development build, not the stable release. u/MrGofer adds that the project has moved from GitHub to Codeberg. Expect the occasional day when the latest X change beats the latest gallery-dl.

Download managers were where people went when other tools failed, and JDownloader was the usual pick, but it has a learning curve. The poster in the March profile thread, who had already hit the gallery-dl error, says JDownloader "looks way too complicated" and asks for something simpler. That is setup cost, not a failure.

Cookie-based tools share one requirement. A commenter in the June profile thread, whose account has since been deleted, says gallery-dl works perfectly for them but you need cookies as well. Anything that walks a whole timeline has to act as a logged-in user, and that is also where the account-risk comments come from.

The Reddit comments about online downloaders are brief and uncomplaining. The complaints show up on X instead, where one poster jokes about crossing a rainforest of scam downloader sites and adult ads (@javataroya, 21 July 2026). We cover that in is a Twitter video downloader safe?.

What posters say about account risk

This part is the least settled. In the March image-downloader thread, u/jabberwockxeno asks if gallery-dl has ever cost anyone a warning or suspension. Every ripping tool they tried over several years did, and even JDownloader on slow settings drew a suspicious-activity notice. u/werid replies that they use gallery-dl daily with no issues and guesses their config is the reason. That is one person's guess, and we would not treat it as protection.

In an r/Twitter thread on a browser extension (13 August 2026), u/KenzoSSW asks whether a profile-gallery extension temp-locks accounts. The poster says it did not lock theirs, but they saw a GitHub issues thread about it. We cannot see X's enforcement, so we can't tell you which tools are safe for a logged-in account. We can say this much: a tool that uses your login is the one that puts your account in the picture. A tool where you paste a public link does not.

When a single-post web tool is enough

If you want one video, one GIF or a few photos from a public post, the simplest option the threads describe is a tool where you paste the link. Ours is the X Media Downloader. Going by its code, you paste a post link and our server asks free public sources for that post's media. Your browser then saves the file straight from X's own servers, in whichever quality you pick, and we never ask for an X login. It has limits:

    • One post at a time. Bulk profile download is planned, not available.
    • Public posts only. Protected accounts and deleted posts return an error.
    • It depends on outside sources, so it can say X didn't answer and ask you to retry.
    • There is an hourly limit per IP address.
    • Text-only posts have nothing to save.

For the full comparison of options, including the downsides of ours, see Best Twitter Video Downloader Tools: What Reddit Recommends. If you want a whole profile, read downloading every photo and video from an X profile before you hand a tool your cookies.

To grab a single clip right now, paste the post link into the X Media Downloader.
