Whether a Twitter video downloader is safe depends on what the page asks you to do. Reddit's safety complaints about download sites come down to the same few things: pages stuffed with ads, buttons that aren't the real button, and prompts to run or install something. A tool that saves a public post from its link needs none of that. Below is what Redditors say, how to size up a site yourself, and what our own free X Media Downloader does and doesn't touch, based on reading its code.

How we collected this and what we could not see
We didn't have access to Reddit's own search. The threads here came from a research pass on 31 October 2026 through Reddit and X search results. On 1 November 2026 we read the saved copy of each thread, comments included. Few threads ask whether an X video downloader specifically is safe, so some of what follows is general download-safety advice from malware and security subreddits, and we label it that way. We did not scan or audit any third-party downloader site for this post, so we make no claim about any named site. We also couldn't see our host's server logs or any ad scripts a third party might add, and the code doesn't show those.
What can go wrong, according to Reddit and X
- Download sites are full of scams and ads. On X, @javataroya (21 July 2026) joked that saving one clip meant wading through scam downloader sites and a flood of adult ads. It's a joke, and it's also the plainest description of the problem.
- One single-purpose site got called adware. In a downloader thread we read while researching this, one Redditor called a single-purpose rip site a scam that pushes you toward adware, and another said it worked but limited what you could do. That's one poster's claim against another's. We can't verify it, and we aren't naming the site.
- People keep asking for a clean one. In r/founder, a July 2026 post asks for a clean, ad-free video downloader that isn't a scam site. The author was promoting their own open-source tool, so read it as a sales pitch, but the question shows how many people feel this way.
- Sometimes a file downloads that you never asked for. In r/computerviruses (29 October 2026), u/Happy_Chipmunk_153 clicked a link to a book PDF and a file downloaded on its own. It wasn't a video site, but the replies are useful. u/Current-Equipment356 suggests turning on the browser setting that makes you pick a name and location for every download, and u/Otherwise_Task7876 suggests scanning any unknown file with VirusTotal and sharing the report.
- Some pop-ups tell you to run a command. In another r/computerviruses thread (30 October 2026), u/GMTQ ran a command a website pop-up told them to run. u/Hit4090 says no legitimate site makes you type a command into a system dialog, and u/Professional_View955, who says they're a malware analyst, advises treating the machine as compromised and changing passwords. We can't check that credential, but the advice matches common practice.
How to tell a downloader is safe to use
These are our own checks, not a Reddit consensus.
- It needs only a link. Saving media from a public post works from the post URL alone. If the page asks for your X password, cookies or an email, stop. Tools that rip a whole profile do need a logged-in session, which is a separate risk we cover in downloading all media from an X profile.
- It never asks you to run, install or allow anything. That means no terminal commands, no browser extension, no notification permission and no "update your player" file.
- The button is the button. When a page shows several download buttons, the real one usually appears in the result after your link is processed. The ones above it are ads.
- Your browser tells you what you got. Turn on the "ask where to save files" setting so nothing lands silently, then check the file type. A video should be an .mp4, not an .exe, .apk or .zip.
- You can scan before you open it. Redditors suggest VirusTotal, which is free, for any file you're unsure about.
What our tool does and does not touch
We built the X Media Downloader, so we read its code before writing this section. Everything below is what the code does, and nothing more.
It asks for one thing: a link to a post on x.com or twitter.com. It pulls the post ID out of that link. There is no login, no X username or password, and no cookies.
With that link, our server asks free public sources for the post's media. It returns the file links, the author's handle, name and avatar, and the post's text. Protected accounts, deleted posts and text-only posts get an error.
The server caches that lookup for 10 minutes, keyed by post ID, so a viral post doesn't hammer the sources. It also keeps a counter against your IP address to enforce an hourly request limit, and that counter expires after an hour. Errors aren't cached.
The video or photo itself never touches our server. Your browser fetches the file straight from X's own servers and saves it on your device, with no referrer sent. Since the file doesn't pass through us, we have no copy of it.
The page around the tool runs the same analytics as the rest of xautodm.com: Microsoft Clarity, a Google tag and a Meta Pixel. It also shows a dismissible banner inviting you to try XAutoDM, and if you dismiss it, your browser's local storage remembers that. We don't run an ad network on the page, and nothing on it asks you to install or run anything.
Two things the code can't answer: what our web host logs by default, and what those analytics scripts collect on their own. If either matters to you, read our privacy policy.
It works on one post at a time. Downloading a whole profile is planned but not available yet.

To check it yourself, paste a public post link into the X Media Downloader and see whether it asks for anything beyond that.
