Should you buy an X account with followers? Going by Reddit threads from 2024 to 2026, the people who answer say no, and X's own rules agree: account sales are not allowed. This post collects what those threads say, what X's policy states, how to check a listing if you buy anyway, and where our own interest sits, because we sell accounts too.

How we collected this and what we could not see

Reddit's own search wasn't available to us, so on 31 October 2026 we pulled threads through the ChatterAPI Reddit and X endpoints and read the comments. There isn't much evidence. We found two threads where real people asked whether to buy and got replies, one from August 2024 and one from August 2026. A third thread was buyers and sellers posting wanted messages. We couldn't see deleted or removed comments, and Reddit's moderators had removed several in those threads. Four or five replies are testimony rather than a survey, so treat nothing here as a statistic.

    What X's rules say

X's Authenticity policy (page dated April 2025, read on 31 October 2026) classes "trading, buying, selling or soliciting access" of X accounts as engagement spam, whether the transfer is temporary or permanent, and whether or not a third-party service handles it. The same policy says X may also suspend other accounts it believes belong to the same holder.

Start from there. Whatever a seller promises, X treats the sale itself as against the rules, and an account that has changed hands can be suspended.

    What redditors say

    • "It's a bait and switch." That was u/lemonspread_ in r/socialmedia (August 2024), replying to a writer who had been offered a 10,000-follower account for $500. Their view was that the followers get unfollowed and you're left with no engagement. u/cyborgogre added that you can't know how many of the followers are bots, and u/midnightr_ain recommended growing organically. The original poster replied that they decided against it. The headline question comes from this thread, and the thread is two years old.
    • "Bought accounts drop followers fast." u/uniform_countryman in r/AskMarketing (31 August 2026) told someone shopping for a 2,000 to 3,000 follower account that purchased accounts lose followers quickly and the algorithm can tell. u/flyingguillotine3 said anyone with something worth saying will reach 3,000 faster than they expect. Both are opinions from two commenters.
    • "How do you verify?" A post in r/DigitalMarketing (12 January 2026) asked for X accounts with 30,000 or more followers. The replies were sellers offering their own accounts, plus one commenter, u/Significant_Cold2944, asking how anyone could verify any of it. Nobody answered. That's the problem with the open market: neither side can check the other.
    • On X itself, most posts in the search results we pulled were for-sale or wanted messages with a Telegram or DM contact. One post (30 October 2026) from @BertrandDiouly described a 7,000-follower account that struggled to get one comment per post: you can buy followers, you cannot buy friends.

Reddit doesn't name a marketplace anyone vouches for, so this post doesn't either.

A follower count is not what you are buying

In the threads, the follower worries split into two: bots that X later removes, and real people who never engage. Neither one helps outreach.

What matters for outreach is how many of an account's followers a stranger can message. In our own scraping, only about 21 percent of a typical follower list can receive a cold DM (the data). A bought follower base is likely worse. If you are paying for followers to message, you are paying for the part that matters least.

How to check a listing before you pay

If you plan to buy anyway, run the checks that sellers' listings leave out. Our guide to vetting an X account covers all seven. In short:

    1. Ask to see the public profile before you pay. If a seller won't show it, that is your answer.
    2. Check the registration date on the profile. Nobody can change it after the fact.
    3. Scroll the posting history and look for real activity rather than a block of identical posts.
    4. Run the handle through a shadowban test. A restricted account is worth less.
    5. Sample the followers. Empty profiles and machine-generated handles mean the count is padding.

Our conflict of interest, and how we grade

We sell accounts at /buy-x-accounts, so weigh this section with that in mind. We don't sell follower counts, and we don't price on them. We check each account against X and grade it by registration date, profile picture, followers and handle. The price follows the grade: Established is $5, Standard is $2 and Basic is $1, with a minimum order of ten. In one batch we graded, registrations ran from 2020 to 2025 and roughly 40 percent were under a year old. That's why we don't describe our stock as a whole as aged or old. None are verified.

Buying and selling accounts is against X's rules, as above. We don't claim an account will last, and we replace one only if its credentials don't work. If all you need is a clean account to start from, warm one up properly. It costs nothing but time.

    What to do instead

For reach, reply-led growth beats purchased numbers. For outreach, a small account that is paced and warmed up is safer than a large one with an unknown history. Why account age changes your DM limit covers what age does and does not buy you. If you are weighing a suspended account, read what Reddit says about inauthentic behavior suspensions.
