In 2026 the Twitter (X) character limit is 280 for a standard post on a free account, up to 25,000 characters for Premium and Premium+ subscribers, 10,000 per direct message, and 160 for your bio. Those four numbers cover almost every situation, but the details around links, replies, and long posts trip people up constantly.
Here is the complete reference, so you never guess whether your post, reply, or DM will fit.
Posts and replies: 280 free, 25,000 Premium
The classic 280-character limit still applies to every free account in 2026. It covers standard posts and replies alike, since X treats a reply as a post in a thread.
Premium and Premium+ subscribers get a dramatically larger ceiling of 25,000 characters per post. In the timeline these long posts collapse behind a Show more link so they do not dominate the feed, but the full text is published on the post page and indexed by search. This is why you now see full essays and threads-in-one-post from Premium accounts.
If you are on a free account and need more room, the old workaround still works best: break your point into a thread of connected 280-character posts.
Direct messages: 10,000 characters
A single DM on X can run up to 10,000 characters, and that cap is the same whether or not you pay for Premium. In practice you will almost never approach it. A cold DM that works is short, specific, and easy to reply to, usually a few lines at most.
If you send outreach DMs, the limit that matters is not length, it is how many DMs you can send per day before X throttles you. That is where campaigns get stuck, not the character count.
Profile limits: bio, name, and handle
Your profile has its own set of caps that Premium does not change:
- Bio: 160 characters
- Display name: 50 characters
- Handle (username): 15 characters
- Location field: 30 characters
The 160-character bio is the one worth obsessing over, because it is the first thing a prospect reads before deciding whether to reply to your DM or follow you back. Treat it as ad copy, not an afterthought.
How links, images, and mentions count
A few rules quietly change your real character budget:
- Links count as 23 characters, always. X runs every URL through its t.co wrapper, so a 12-character link and a 120-character link both cost you 23. Length of the URL is irrelevant.
- Images, GIFs, videos, and polls cost zero characters. Attaching media does not eat into your text at all.
- Mentions and hashtags count normally. Every character in @handle and #hashtag comes out of your limit.
- Emojis usually count as two characters. Because of how they are encoded, a single emoji typically uses two of your allotted characters.
Quick reference table
| Element | 2026 limit |
|---|---|
| Post (free) | 280 characters |
| Post (Premium / Premium+) | 25,000 characters |
| Reply (free) | 280 characters |
| Direct message | 10,000 characters |
| Bio | 160 characters |
| Display name | 50 characters |
| Handle | 15 characters |
| Link (any length) | counts as 23 |
Why the limits still matter
Character limits shape how you write on X. The 280 cap rewards punchy, quotable posts. The 160-character bio forces you to say what you do in one line. And the roomy 10,000-character DM limit means the constraint on outreach is never space, it is standing out in a crowded inbox and pacing your sends.
If your goal is turning that profile and those DMs into booked calls, tight copy is step one and safe, personalized sending is step two.
